My mother, in particular, has profound belief in knowing the future through the crystal ball and expresses brand loyalty by always consulting the same old wizened woman in my neighborhood. The very mention of the lady's name reminds me of her trademark crystal ball and the tarot cards that she uses to eke out her livelihood. My mother, by reasons of inquisitiveness and superstitions inherited from her ancestors, has always expressed a keen desire to know what the future holds for me apart from wanting to know about her future.

As an innocent dazed six-year-old, I used to silently stare into the crystal ball that was placed against the windowsill in the mysterious living room of the fortune-telling lady. She would always place her palms on both sides of the crystal and foretell events that were bound to happen in my life. To me, it only appeared to be the reflected images of the satin drapes that hung over the window. I could only conclude that whatever she predicted was true or that she was foretelling in such a way as to have my mother come back to her again to earn more, owing to my mother's interest and curiosity about the future.

It is a hard core reality that we are all striving to learn more of the world and widen our knowledge; the truth is that all though we may assert that we don't believe in fortune-tellers, we all exhibit a tendency of being superstitious. A businessman may claim to have no belief in horoscopes, tarot cards, numerology and the like. Yet, the same businessman religiously reads the stock exchange column in the newspaper daily to know where his business stands. I would suggest that if we want to make it happen in whatever field we choose to be, the right way is to seek information from books and the internet to learn more about our career through the works and experiences of other people, successful and unsuccessful alike.

The worldwide web is the medium that people prefer today to gather information about anything under the sun and increasing dependence on the internet for information is leading to increasing efforts to supply answers and information to people as quickly and efficiently as possible. Did you know that the Internet is one huge storehouse of facts and findings that it will take the average man nearly nine centuries to read all that it has to offer us. Sadly, by the time we finish reading everything at the fag end of the 900th year, all the information would have gone out of vogue for we are living in an age where today's newspaper becomes tomorrow's wastepaper!
