of defining, creating and maintaining a positive attitude. The
definition is the easy part: creation and maintenance of a
positive mental attitude are where the challenges are for most
people.
A good definition of "positive attitude" will emphasize
being affirmative and certain, without being overconfident or
intolerant. One comic definition of positive is "mistaken at
the top of one's voice". A positive attitude is tolerant and
forgiving of others. Any mental attitude that demands absolute
acceptance by others is not positive - it is unproductive and
negative.
Another element of a positive attitude is having a
worthwhile goal or vision. The focus of your thoughts will
determine what you will produce. Having "positive" thoughts
about a goal that takes advantage of others in a negative way
will not produce positive results. By using a just and fair
approach to creating and maintaining goals, positive thinking
will naturally fall in line with the goal or vision.
Creating a positive attitude takes work. The negative
influence of other people, disappointment and failure all
contribute to the sad fact that most people have only a limited
positive attitude. Hard work and a commitment to persistence in
staying positive are necessary. Learning and practicing
specific skills in increasing your positive thinking and
protecting yourself from negative thinking is the challenge you
must accept.
Maintaining a positive attitude comes from successful
experience and a willingness to exercise will power over the
negative influences in life and in other people. Being
influenced by negative forces takes no work at all. Negative
influences come naturally and stay by repeatedly thinking about
them. The duty of every person who chooses to make a positive
attitude an unbreakable habit is to learn to stop negative
thinking as soon as it begins. Replacing negative thoughts and
influences with positive thoughts and feelings becomes easier
and easier with practice.
A positive attitude is clearly more than just smiling and
saying positive things. A true positive attitude comes from
building habits that lead to success and away from surrender of
control. The only thing in life we have absolute control over
is our thoughts and our attitudes. Be willing to accept that
fact and take control of your inner life. Make a positive
attitude your strongest habit of thinking.
