So many of us spend hours trying to make our work as creative and new as possible, given the stiff competition we are faced with. Instead of thinking about how to start working at your problem, you can think backwards to come about a solution for better creative writing skills.

Keeping just the theme in hand, you can use reverse thinking to develop your theme into a full-length story. How about terming this as reverse engineering?

For instance, for all those who are fascinated by the world of detectives and had nurtured a secret wish to be a super-sleuth, you can use reverse plotting to weave an exciting murder mystery against a theatre backdrop for starters. However, it is a long way before you finally lend the finishing touches to your murder mystery story. You can think backwards and come out with your original murder story rather than easily just lifting an existing story from the racks or the web.

For example, if the outline of your story is just that of a theatre group operating in a dilapidated theatre in some remote corner of England somewhere in the late 1940s. The main actor in the theatre group is found murdered and the newest member in the cast falls under the prime suspects in the case. However, one of the female artistes in the troupe has her own doubts about the case and sets out to find out the real murderer and bring her colleague out of the jail. Given this is the rough outline of the story, bring in reverse thinking to develop the story further. A normal storywriter would begin by focusing on the situation, probe into the story and reveal the culprit at the end. In reverse thinking you first list out the various twists to the plot and work back to the beginning of the story. Inverted thinking goes this way:· Various twists to the tale that lead to catching the actual culprit. · Then the suspect, the youngest member is released · The cops are shown to be skeptical at the new findings as opposed to their own conclusions about the case. · The actual cause of the murder, the course of the murder plot is unearthed. · The senior female actress disagrees with the turn of events and probes into the case herself. · Police arrest the prime suspect, the youngest member in the cast · Evidence found against the youngest cast member to the crime · Cops interrogate all the theatre members and compile list of suspects · Main actor is found slain in the back stalls · Quarrels and arguments among cast over ill-treatment · His vilification of the cast intensifies · Main actor humiliates some of the cast members at the first reading of play · New casts are auditioned and selected · Long-lost friends re-unite · Provincial theatre group converges on theatre for the forthcoming winter season

Now by turning these events on their head I have a storyline to make my outcome materialize… 1. Provincial theatre group converges on theatre for the forthcoming winter season; 2. Long-lost are rekindled; 3. New casts are auditioned and selected; 4. Main actor humiliates some of the cast members at the first reading of play 5. His vilification of the cast intensifies; 6. Quarrels and arguments among cast over ill-treatment 7. Main actor is found slain in the back stalls. 8 Cops interrogate all the theatre members and compile list of suspects 9. Evidence found against the youngest cast member to the crime 10 Police arrest the prime suspect, the youngest member in the cast 11. The senior female actress disagrees with the turn of events and probes into the case herself. 12. The actual cause of the murder, the course of the murder plot is unearthed. 13. The cops are shown to be skeptical at the new findings as opposed to their own conclusions about the case. 14. Then the suspect, the youngest member is released 15. With various twists to the tale, it finally leads to catching the actual culprit.

Inverted thinking is nothing but thinking out of the box, thinking from different possible perspectives in order to make your work different from the others. Working the reverse thinking way helps your list cumulate as you jot down newer ideas and thoughts to it. Start practicing reverse thinking and learn to write in newer ways far from the conventional writing styles.
